The Peoples Council of San Marcos, in harmony with the other peoples of Latin America, in the international day of the indigenous people, with lot of hope we say:

The Peoples in their constant effort for the success of the ideas of liberty and justice, are forced in certain historical moments to make big sacrifices.

Our beloved Guatemala has come to one of those moments. And endless oppression still exists in our country, and it has just become unbearable. The impositions of transnational megaprojects such as mining and hydroelectric dams are only filling the glass of bitterness.

These projects as well as others, don´t aim for the prosperity of the People, but just to make richer a small group, that using its influences had transformed this land in a source of personal gain, exploiting without any consideration everything they want.

This small group consists of a few families that had been directly or indirectly exercising political power in Guatemala. Since the beginning of the invasion they had controlled most of the industry, agriculture, exportation, finance and commerce.

All of them are part of the CACIF, the most powerful organ of the private business, which has a lot of power handling the “puppet” governments we have had. All of them are big land owners, a model of land concentration that was fertilized with the blood of many of our brothers.

Members of the same are the major stock holders, advisors, or legal representatives of the most important banks of the country and are founders of the principal universities of the country, through which they form, train and educate their bases and thus transmit them the ideology of exploitation.

This explains why all the administrative, judicial and legislative machinery obeys only one will, the desire of CACIF and its friends, which principal motivation is to maintain the power, no matter what, for the benefit of themselves and their partners.

The history of human behavior shows that the people have always rebelled against the tyrannies that had oppressed them.

That is the reason, that in the International Day of
Indigenous Peoples we gather in plazas, we walk on the streets and are concentrated in the main roads of the country, to make and invitation to the government of Alvaro Colom to start walking in favor of the people, the people that vote for him, and not be afraid of the people, if he really stands for them.

We urge, the not always glorious Guatemalan army to stand for the its people, its country and its home, don´t be mislead again, the people are your brothers and you are made of them.

Encourage the communities of San Juan Sacatepequez, San Pablo and the brave women of San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Ixcan… and all the rest of the people who resist the imposition of the megaprojects that affect their way of life and our Mother Earth.

We make a call to everyone, to join the movement of Community Consultations, which is growing fast, and is looking for the restoration of the true Government of the People.
